Go-kart racing at Action Raceway in Auckland

With one of the longest go-kart tracks in New Zealand, bumper boats and special kid-friendly karts, Action Raceway in Silverdale offers fun activities for families, workmates and friends to enjoy together.

Racing go karts

Our racing go-karts are New Zealand made, powered by 200cc Honda engines that generate 6.5 hp. They easily reach speeds of up to 35km/h. On a winding track, sitting only a hands breadth off the ground in these $5,500 vehicles, you get an amazing sensation of speed.

The 320 metre race track is designed to present a variety of driving challenges, even for advanced go-kart racers.

We record race times with a Formula One style computerised timing system. Spectators can see lap times for each kart on screen and drivers can get printouts afterward. Lap times on our race track average around 27 seconds, with really good drivers able to shave three seconds off that.

Driver safety

Action Raceway takes great care to ensure the safety of drivers and spectators.

Our operation and the design of our go-kart track are registered with and approved by the Department of Labour. To avoid dangerous obstacles, our 84x26m building was specially designed to have a free span with no pillars. The race track is lined with large stacked tyres to absorb impact in case of an accident.

The go-karts are equipped with roll bars and limiters that prevent them going over the 35km/h legal speed limit for karts. They are all well maintained by our in-house mechanics. In addition, all our go-karts are thoroughly checked and certified by an independent mechanical engineer every 18 months.

We issue all drivers with approved safety helmets. Long hair must be tied up and everyone must wear sturdy shoes that cover the feet. Our experienced staff gives everyone complete safety instructions before their first race.

If we believe an unsafe situation is developing on track, we have the ability to immediately reduce the speed of all karts remotely.

Indoor kart racing league

We run a fortnightly kart racing league club for motor sport enthusiasts. Young drivers can come race karts at Action Raceway under controlled competitive conditions.

Driver training and coaching

Action Raceway offers driver training courses. These driving classes are not only useful for people who want to improve their go-kart racing skills, but also to prepare drivers to drive cars on public roads. Apart from basic driving skills, we also teach the principles of defensive driving. Classes are offered every second Sunday morning for groups of eight students or more. You can book for these classes on our usual number – 09 426 1070.

Kart rides for smaller children

Our Jeep karts are designed to give young children a safe driving experience. There is space for parents or caregivers to go in the Jeep with the child if needed. The petrol engine karts can only attain a maximum speed of 6km/h, but experience shows that this provides good thrills for drivers under 9 years of age. These Jeeps are great for kids’ parties.

Jeep rides are only available when there are no go-karts on the track. If there are enough drivers, we can fit Jeep rides between kart races. However, it’s best to call and discuss your needs with our staff beforehand.

How this family entertainment venture developed

Action Raceway is a family venture. Colin and Carol George both had corporate jobs in the mid-1990s when Colin and his team went go-karting one day. He came back home and said he really enjoyed it, but believes a go-karting venue could be done so much better...

The idea grew and a few months later the couple, together with their sons Sean and Keeley, opened the first Action Raceway on Foundary Road in Silverdale. It is the only go-kart track north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. The venture worked so well that the owners were inspired to go even better. So in 2002, they bought land and erected a purpose-built structure to house an indoor go-kart racetrack next to the motorway in Silverdale.

Colin and Carol took the opportunity to add bumper boats to the attractions. They have plans to develop Action Raceway into an even more varied amusement park in the near future. Watch this space!
