Kart Racing Tips

The most important factor in kart racing is driving skills and by putting into practice the kart racing tips below youʼll build a solid platform for your racing.

  • Sit in your race kart correctly with your back straight and resist the temptation to lean forward towards the wheel. This will make a huge difference to how your kart handles.
  • Make sure your hands are placed correctly on the kart steering wheel. The lowest position where 9 and 3 appear on a clock, the highest 10 and 2. Always hold the wheel in the same place as this will ensure a stable drive.
  • Keep the kart straight and wide for as long as you dare before you apply the brake hard at the approach to a corner.
  • Release the brake before you turn in. In karting, it's not about how fast you can get into the corner, but how fast you can exit.
  • Go straight as often as you can. Turning reduces the speed of the kart. Practice turning in later and later until you can't reach the apex, then youʼll know youʼve gone too far.
  • Practice as much as you can as adhering to the above may be difficult at first! Remember time in a kart is going to cost you so plan to make your practices as effective as possible and always race at a supervised track.
  • Learn a kart's faults and quirks. Some karts will slide in the rear, some will push in the front, some will have flat tyres and youʼll fight to keep them in a straight line. Some will bog, while others will be fiesty. To be competitive you'll learn how to deal with all manner of malfunctioning karts, and you'll win by adjusting your driving style to suit. The best indoor karters are masters of adaptation.

Indoor karting is a lot of fun, not to mention being the most affordable form of motor racing! At Action Raceway Silverdale youʼll find some of New Zealand's best and most enthusiastic drivers – thereʼs always someone to race and learn from. See you at the track.
